The concept of empowerment has gained much interest both in mass media, government, non-governmental and academic spheres. What does this term mean? Do you believe in it, is it something which is acheivable and who must empower and how and when and more importantly why?

It's overused, and misdirected, so often. It means that a certain person, or cohort is recognized as being important enough, or strong enough to make a difference.
When women were not allowed to vote, they had little power in socety and especially in business. The right to vote empowered them; they now could make their wishes count at the voting booth.
Today, so many people believe that they are left out, are not sharing the wealth, cannot make a difference, and thus have no power. Power is gained when groups come together for a common cause, and coalesce into a strong 'block' that is recognized by others who have the "power". The meer recognition of the group is empowerment.

Empowerment (the concept) means to help people achieve things for themselves.

It's really an old concept and does not work. People just don't pass power down. Power can only be given to those above.

Read some of Max weber's work on power and authority.

Anthony Giddens also wrote alot about this concept.

There are many sociological writers who have explained this than I can ever do, so happy researching and good luck.

Empowerment is the capacity of a gruop of persons to govern themselves, or to govern the others. Or to make their own rules not obeing the others. Is the ability of a group that is consider less, for example dissable people, women, black people or any other people to sotp obeying the laws of the people who have more power, to beging making their own laws and govern themselves. To stop depending of others. Other example coud be n undeveloped country who wants to empower its economy sistem and to stop depending on bigger developed countries. Thats kind of empower, taking the powernd stop being obeying others.

For psychotherapists: Empowerment is teaching someone to do for them-self. In other words, good mental health.

For politicians: Empowerment is taking money and resources away from those who have, and giving to those who don't have. In other words, communism.
