Christine, don't you know better than to ask such a sensible question on this forum? but, do you think it could be because it is so profitable for a certain group of parasites called judges ,prosecutors, D,E,A, F,B,I, A.T.F. Marshall's service and certain prison officials such as wardens, some high ranking guard personnell, etc who have stock in UNI CORE, which is a private company with limited stock , meaning only certain people can buy this stock, who can work prisoners for 35 cents per hour free rent on a federal site, and not put any thing back into the prison system, who has a monopoly on gov, purchases meaning any product UNI CORE makes the gov agency's must buy from them if it is available thru them, and they manufacture furniture , mattresses, all types of office furniture , desks , chairs, file cabinets , etc, clothing for the military and some civilian.mail bags, and many many other items on the market, all manufactured by slave labor,It is estimated the tax payer pays $30.000 per year per prisoner for the concrete bunk they sleep on, the slop they are fed that no self respecting hog would eat, practically no medical, except a P.A. "physicians assistant" to administer medicine or ? 1 T,V, per 65 prisoners, 1 15 minute phone call per week at $3,50 per local call, and many more amenities but, you should get the picture now, Add a 98.8 % conviction ratio to that and you will see we have a free country? BUT FOR WHO????
after reading the answers to your question I must add, America has the most people in prison than any other country in the world including China and North Korea,

Where do you get your information on the number of people in jail? Is it based on a percentage of the population or just numbers. Are you including China and Russia?
Other than these questions, there are other reasons. Many countries execute large numbers of criminals so they do not have many inmates. Singapore canes felons. If the felon passes out before the total number of lashes are meted out the felon is allowed to recuperate and then the rest of the lashes are meted out. Therefore there is a very strong incentive to not break the law.
Freedom is the right to do and say what you want, as long as it does not offend the majority or interfere with someone else's freedoms. That is why we have laws. Britain, Canada, France, Israel, Italy, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland are just a few of the other free-est countries in the world.

kind of a silly question, dont u think? Well, we are free to do as we wish and say as we wish, which allows many to choose to ignore what is right and just and what is wrong and unjust. Those who ignore the laws must accept responsibility for their actions: therefore, pay the price: jail, or worse. And where do you get your statistics about "more than any other" ? Jails also are meant for rehabilitation too, many un-free countries hang or behead, or cut off hands and fingers for crimes. There are plenty of reasons why we have so many in jail......maybe if we hadnt asked God to get out of so many public places we might not have many of the problems we have now. Happy New Year.

There is a downside to freedom; without a government to dictate every move you must have self discipline. Because you are free you must control yourself so that you do not interfere with the freedoms of others. It is easier to avoid trouble if a soldier points a rifle at you and tells you where to go.

A good example of this can be seen in the rising incarceration of women. In the past when women did not work outside the home there was little crime committed by women. It is hard to rob a bank from the laundry room. Since women have entered the outside workforce the incarceration rates have exploded. Not because women have turned evil but because they have more opportunity to commit crimes

1) There are more people, naturally there will be more in jail.
2) A valuable yet simple comparison requires a relative comparison of the number in jail to the actual population. For example, 10 people in jail is obviously more than 5 people in jail. However, what if there are 10 people in jail, out of the entire population of 1,000-01%. On the other hand, there are 5 people in jail of an entire population of 10 people-50%. Clearly the lack of information leads to the inability to form any valuable thesis.
3) Cite your sources if you expect us to regard your claims with any value. I believe you lack the effort and discretion from which to critically judge and analyze such information. It is clear your story is missing more than a couple chapters.

If you give people freedom they are more free to do stupid things. It's the price we pay for having as much freedom as we do. The down side of freedom is that many will abuse it. We have to have jails for criminals so that we can continue living in a free country. Total freedom would be chaotic and our system would never have survived as long as it has because someone who should have been in Jail would have destroyed it. And we'd be in constant war. And we'd have no freedom.

Because there is alot of crime, we are too lienant and take too long to punish. Maybe if the laws were tougher and we were'nt so slow to punish it would make a difference. I think once someone is convicted they should be sentenced quickly in a reasonable time frame. There's too much crime in America that is why so many are in jail. Illegal drugs don't help either.

Because freedom at all levels = Chaos
When people are given as many freedoms as we Americans have, chaos is the ultimate outcome.
If a person can't seem to live free, without addidng to the chaos, they will loose their freedom.

Plus, over the last five decades, people don't seem to have any structure in their lives. Thank the liberal thinkers for that. No religion, no authority over them, they let their kids do whatever they want to do. What else can be the expected result besides crime?

Freedom brings the very good and the very bad in society which means the are great opportunities for honest people as well as criminals but that's just part of being very free. Nothings perfect but luckily there are many more honest hard working people in the US than criminals.

Being a Free country and being in jail dont mean the same. We are a country of laws and if you break the law, you go to jail. Being a Free country, means you can vote, complain, protest, question authority, come and go without checkpoints, speak your mind.
Being in jail just means you got cought doing something illegal.
