Theseus was prince of Athens. After King Minos of Crete won a war against Athens, he demanded 7 athenian boys & 7 girls be sent to Crete every nine years, as a sacrifice to the minotaur. The minotaur was a man-eating monster, who was kept inside a labyrinth (maze) that was so difficult to navigate that those thrown inside never found their way out.

Anyway, Theseus volunteered to go to Crete and face the minotaur. When he got there, Minos' daughter, Ariadne fell in love with him. She gave him a sword to fight the minotaur, and thread with which to retrace his steps through the minotaur's labyrinth to escape.

So Theseus killed the minotaur and led the Athenians out of the labyrinth. Then he sailed back to Athens (after ditching Ariadne on the island of Naxos). There he became King, because his father, Aegeus, had killed himself (because he mistakenly thought that Theseus had died trying to fight the minotaur).

(There's lots of side-stories here, too-- like how the minotaur was the result of Minos' wife (Pasiphae) mating with a bull, which she did because of a spell cast on her by Neptune, which was because Minos had tried to deceive him. Also how Ariadne got the thread idea from Daedalus, the designer of the labyrinth, and because of this betrayal, Minos banished Daedalus & his son Icarus to a tower, where Daedalus made wax wings to escape, but Icarus flew too close to the sun & his wings melted... it's a real interconnected set of stories. You can get all the parts on Wikipedia.)

PS: I don't think that this story's for children.
