I've just become interested in art... or more interested than I was before. I'm not a very good artist, in that I can't draw people, or basically any object without it looking cartoony. I am, however, very good at making geometric shapes look cool by overlapping them, and using different techniques like hatching, cross hatching, and stippling to fill them in. Is it okay to just keep drawing abstract pieces of artwork, or should I try again to become better at drawing real life things?

abstract is fine, but it's better to try many different techniques. if you can learn the traditional styles, you will have a better understanding about the principles of abstraction, and how abstraction evolved from straight representation. challenging yourself will only make you a better artist, and overall- draw as much as you can!

It is perfectly natural to be drawn to geometric shapes. It is however helpful to try all sorts of approaches to drawing before you finalize your decision to render all drawings abstractly. Expand your horizons. Try figure drawing and a 101 still life class so that you may learn many techniques. Expanding your vision will only help you develop your own personal style more exquisitely in the end. But no matter what...enjoy every minute of it :)

Abstract is as good as realist art two pieces of art that is abstract and realistic can be worth the same. Abstract is just a way of illustrating your inspiration a just not interpreting it into something realistic or something people can relate to easily.

Abstract or whatever style you do is fine, but if you choose to get a formal art education that will teach you to draw realistically, the benefits of that kind of education will be apparent in all areas of your art.

abstract is ok.
but all the artists doing abstracts were well trained in what you call realistic. abstraction is not the short cut to the artistic expression.it is longest route.unless you learn the basic of art- you can not create great abstract.abstract is much more subtle form.
enjoy

Abstract is fine. But still you should try for drawing real life things to improve your ability.

Is abstract o.k.????? I think abstract is GREAT!!! have fun with your study and practice of art...that is the whole point of it. the more you practice it and study it the more you will expand your horizons, and eventually you will seek classes and lessons and books and such...(every artist does, child...everyone of us.)
