Watch out for the "free sites" a lot of them will claim that they are free but the moment you try to contact another member or read your mail they will ask to upgrade to a paid membership.
Now how do you know which site to avoid?
Easy check if a site has an affiliate program. Usually they promise a commission on signup. If so then you know that they lie about being free otherwise where do they get the money to pay to affiliates?
I just started to use some of free sites and I tell you singlesnet.com is a good example of a "free site" that is not free.
2busy2date.com so far has never charged me and they do not have an affiliate program. match.com and yahoo personals are not free but to be honest they've never claimed that.
I hope this helps

I would like to know too.
Myspace and yahoo 360 are great sites but not for dating because you don't have any way of knowing if those people are interested or not until they reject you.
I and I'm sure the asker would like to know of one that is spacifically for dating.

My space.com You can post pictures and profiles and browse.
Also 360 on the answers thing. You can post pictures and story about yourself and then go into browse and read about others.
Find someone you find interesting and then send a message.
