During a full season, no team has gotten in with worse than a .500 record. The Browns won the AFC Central in 1985 with an 8-8 record; while the Saints (1990), Jets (1991), Lions (1999), Cowboys (1999), Vikings (2004), and Rams (2004) have won Wild Card berths with 8-8 records. The strike of 1982 reduced the season to nine games, and I believe there were a couple teams that got in at 4-5. Only the 2004 Vikings and Rams won their first-round games.
Since the NFL playoff system expanded in 1990 to include 12 teams, the best record for a non-playoff team is 10-6. The Eagles and 49ers both did this in 1991, and the Dolphins have done it at least once. Not sure if there are any others.
I think sometime in the 1970s, back when the league still had a 14-game schedule, there was a 10-4 team that missed the playoffs, possibly the Bengals.

Seahawks and Chiefs the two have been given fortunate, and the Bears are borderline. The NFC and AFC Wests are going to be harder next 12 months, and that i think of that the Chargers and 49ers/Rams will win their respective divisions next season. If Jay Cutler has a greater useful 12 months next 12 months, then the Bears can repeat as branch champs.

10-6 is the best non-playoff record, I think.
And horrible teams got in in the strike season of 1982.

Can't seem to find it to confirm it but I believe an 8-8 team made the play-offs back in the 80s. Will happen again this year in the NFC probably.
