His ability to shift things around even tho you already knew the infamous 'macguffin' (his term for the driving unknown of a movie).
Plus his ability to creat images in your mind without really showing them.. (in Psycho, the knife is never shown stabbing Janet Blair... but most first time viewers (after they finish screaming) will swear that it does... the stuff going down the drain is chocolate syrup as I recall).

For my favourite, it's a tie between Rear Window and Vertigo. Vertigo has a possessing quality that makes me want to return to it time and again and let all the emotions and colours and drama wash over me.
I also love Rope and The Trouble with Harry - not the most popular with critics, but certainly both films that have mesmerized me for a long time.

Vertigo is the Best! I loved the way he treated his actors, like animals. I love spotting the Cameos too.

absolutely! no matter how much time goes by, his movies still pack a punch, still entertain.
the birds still give me the creeps - and north by northwest is still a dead on thriller. who hasn't been freaked out by psycho? i love them all!
