If you want it to last until you graduate I would sugest the Toshiba Tecra. It is a business class notebook that may cost a little more but you are buying logevety. Just about $1100. A Mac will be less likely to be compatable with software and programs you will need for college.

There is no better laptop made than the MacBook. Not only does it come bundled with a great bunch of stuff to make your computer very usable right out of the box, the issue of getting bombed with viruses etc is almost non-existant with the Mac.
If you use your laptop for internet, music, video, photos, etc the Mac wins hands down. If you need Microsoft Office, the Mac is the equal of a Windows machine. If you have to connect to a corporate network, you might like the Dell.

Here is a new answer... NONE OF THE ABOVE!!!!! Listen to me, if you want to have a headache for the rest of your life, go ahgead, buy a dell/mac. If you don't, buy an HP or a Toshiba. Those two are the best laptops on the market right now. Dell just sucks and MAC is always freezing and nothing is compatible with it. Also, it just sucks..... Ahhhhh.... I don;t want to talk about my bad experience with MAC. Just listen, get a Toshiba laptop or HP laptop. Best two choices right there.

Let me put it this way, anything you can do on a dell, you can do on a macbook. But you'll get better service from Apple Computer.
