depends on the circumstances.
save someones feelings: no you don't look fat in that outfit.
to get out of trouble: honestly, i didn't eat that last cookie
you get the idea.
though, self preservation is the most common reason.

To avoid hurting someone's feelings. Particularly my husband's. I'll tell him something's ok when it's really not, but he's trying so hard to help in the house.
