Cramunit got it right. It was Billy Gibbons from ZZ-Top. It confused me because Hendrix died before the first ZZ-Top album came out. But he must have heard them perform before the album was released.

Wow this is too easy. Eric Clapton which was in the Band cream at the time another power trio of the 60's. Now of course he is solo.
