How would you get your site more widely known amongst your target audience, without spamming (in any way!)?

Question

If you've some sites on a specialist interest adult interest (nonprofit) and wish to make more of your target audience aware of it, how would you go about it? I.e bring it to the attention of interested people without email, forum and site spamming? Any suggestions folks? Also without causing undue offence :-).

As my site is a little specialist adult it probably won't suit a Myspace site I think.
I used meta tags years ago, do they still work now on search engines? I'm not selling anything, so banner ads might not be so great in this one instance.

As my sites don't make money, or will ever, I'm only exploring free options :-). Grateful though I am for all suggestions so far.

Try using sponsered links on google.

Make sure your audience can find you via search engines. You can take care of that yourself by contacting them, one at the time.

There is a trick to doing that. Different for each one of them. You'll just have to experiment. There are also services that will do that for you. Costs vary by service.

One way, would be if you correspond with other people in any way, then make it part of your signature. Or, if you post on other forums, etc. and it is allowed, make it part of your signature where it is on every piece of correspondence you send out---without it being a specific spam email.

Create a myspace page! It's easy and effective! Many bands have them! I guess a non-profit could have one too!
