Can 8 ppl play on the wii e.g. like can you connect 4 wiimotes and 4 GC controllers so that 8 ppl can play a game at a time? Also can you use any SD card for the wii?

I haven't come across any Wii games that support 8 players. If there are Gamecube games that support 8 players, you still wouldn't be able to do this because the Wii Remotes are disabled when you play Gamecube games.
As for SD memory cards, to my knowledge you can use any SD card for Wii storage. I have a couple of low memory cards that came with Canon digital cameras that I've tried out on the Wii, and both of those work. However, I prefer using my 2 GB SD card instead. You can pick one up for relatively cheap if you know where to look for them.

Edit: there are reports that Wario Ware will allow 12 player multiplayer...I've included a link to an IGN interview that discusses how multiplayer will be handled in Wario Ware -- by passing the Wii Mote around.
