Mainly for pleasure. They can sometimes be used for stretching, but not really. And as to containment . . . well, are you talking about what I think you're talking about? It's definitely not about 'containment'- people who enjoy anal pleasures moderately (no extreme practices like frequent fisting, etc.) have no problems with incontinence.
People wear buttplugs because they provide pleasurable sensation to the nerve-rich interior of the rectum and may even touch and stimulate those special places- the prostate in males and the G-spot in women. If you wanted to stretch your rectum in order to accommodate something larger, you could use a buttplug, but since theya re rather small (usually), a dildo would probably work better.

Butt-plugs are for pleasuring yourself and in some cases for pleasuring your Master, if you have one. They are not used for containment. Why? Thinking of going out and getting one? A few things you should know first are:
(1) Walmart does not sell them.
(2) Butt-plugs and dildos are not the same thing. A dildo is for a few hours. A butt-plug is for wearing all day, while you're at work or in church or visiting your Mom.
(3) Try a small one first. They can hurt going in and hurt staying put.
(4) Never share them at Show and Tell or you'll start a fad and pretty soon everyone will be wearing them and all the fun and novelty will be taken away.

My ex used to use these for stretching himself. He was into the whole "fisting" scene and was able to get one fist up his bum but then later on he tried different sizes so that he can get two fists up his bum successfully. Later on I found out he also used all kinds of drugs to relax his innards more besides the use of these plugs.
I was tied up once and had one tied to my but too as a form of submission.
