I guess I must have been hit in the neck playing backyard football yesterday, though I apparently did not realize it (or didn't think enough *of it* to remember it) at the time.

Weirdly, the swelling is on both the left and right sides of the frontal region of my neck, right between my adam's apple (which is NOT swollen) and my pulses on each side. The soreness isn't overwhelming, but it is annoying and a little stiffening.

Ice didn't seem to help at all, strangely, as it does with most swelling episodes.

Nah guys, trust me, if it was something serious I would know, and head to the doctor. I don't have a broken neck, lol-- the soreness here feels like muscle soreness (although, I am intrigued by the swollen lymph node answer and very well may be coming down with something since it was so cold yesterday. However, my lymph nodes don't usually flare up and get sore like this when I'm sick).

I appreciate the answers, though. Keep 'em coming!

Rest. - Don't do anything strenuous that would cause alot of jerking or jolting to your neck.

Ice. - Try put some ice packs on there to keep the swelling down. Also ibuprofin is a pain reliever and also swelling reducer.

Compression. - Maybe try put some type ofcommpression on there. Not too tight of course because it is your neck and you don't wanna cut off your breathing!

Elevation. - Basically don't stand on your head! The more blood that is in the area then the more swollen it will be.

Good luck to you. I hope you get to feeling better soon. If you still have severe pain in a few days or if it suddenly gets worse you should definitely seek medical attention. Sounds like you are fine right now though.

If ice is not helping it may be swollen glands. In particular the thyroid is a wraparound gland at the base front of your throat. You may be developing hyperthyroidism (over activity of the tyroid gland). You should definitely see a doctor right away. I have hypothyroidism (underactive gland), it does not hurt and you may not even notice the symptoms. I take a very small pill, called Levoxyl/generic for Synthroid which is TSH or thryoid stimulating hormone. A simple visit to the doctor and a quick blood test may be all you need. Even if you don't think it is a thryoid related problem, you should probably check it out anyway since the swelling repeats itself and doesn't respond to heat or cold.

SOunds like a bit of swollen glands. You may or may not feel a bit ill over the next few days. You may feel fine as your body is dealing with the infection fine.

If the swelling doesn't subside in a few days then see your doctor.

Your symptoms actually sound like swollen glands, unrelated to an injury. Maybe you are coming down with a cold or the flu?

Whiplash perhaps? You don't need to be in a car accident to get whiplash. Just a thought. Try taking iboprophen and alternate heat/ice.
