Coming from a huge Musical Theatre buff and up-and-coming performer, I highly reccomend the following show soundtracks:

A Chorus Line (original or revival cast recordings, though I am very partial to the revival)

The Drowsy Chaperone (Sutton Foster!! Great New show)

Urinetown (very contemporary, and completely hilarious)

Damn Yankees 1994 Revival (Popular actor Victor Garber as Mr. Applegate. He's great.)

Into The Woods Original Cast Recording (Sondheim=brilliancy. This is my favorite Sondheim show)

Little Women (not highly recognized, as it had a very short run. But the music is completely amazing.)

Seussical The Musical (the same team that wrote Ragtime. A very clever show with catchy music)

You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown Revival Cast (actor Anthony Rapp of RENT fame, Wicked's Kristin Chenoweth, and Roger Bart, most commonly known as Carmen Ghia from The Producers. Plus several other very talented actors. Better than the original, with 2 new songs)

RENT original broadway cast recording (way better than the movie soundtrack. More music and better quality. Fabulous rock operetta.)

Titanic: A New Musical (not so new anymore, but still just as good. Score by Maury Yeston, VERY good.)

Little Shop of Horrors Revival Cast (great recording, with several new songs. And Hunter Foster, Sutton Foster's equally talented brother.)

Avenue Q (a little on the risque side, but VASTLY hilarious and very entertaining.)

And if you're REALLY into broadway shows:
Forbidden Broadway! They spoof every show, director, actor, and composer there ever was. Any of their recordings are hysterical.

So I hope that helps!
