We have had the death penalty since the inception of this country, and crimes punishable by death are still committed. In addition, the death penalty as it is applied these days is an abhorrent social inequity.
What I find truly ironic is that when the trend to abolish the death penalty became the norm, violent crime decreased...

There have been many criminology studies on this subject. The consensus is that penalties are not effective deterrents, and the death penalty in particular has no deterrent effect. It is the expectation of getting caught which creates a deterrent.

Not really!
Murderers have the lost recidivism rate of almost all crimes as most are crimes of passion! So by definition it can't be an effective deterrent as no one involved in a crime of passion thinks much about the death penalty!
I am against the death penalty except for psychopaths and mass murderers!

Absolutely!!! No person who has ever received the death penalty has ever committed another crime - not just the crime for which he received the DP, but ANY crime. 100% effective deterrent.

Homicide rates are higher in states that have the death penalty than in states that do not.
Potential murders don't think they will be caught (if they think at all.)

It would be if it was applied properly.
It currently is not, because even after being sentenced to death, you are going to be alive a minimum of 15 years, and you only have a 10 percent chance of actually being executed.

no, because it is not swift enough.
and it is very rare.
i don't think anyone considers it before doing the murder.
they consider jail or prison or getting caught, but
the death penalty is so far off...i don't think so.
