Assyria, which was also known as Mesopotamia, is one of the oldest civilizations - it can trace its existence back MORE than 6500 years. The Assyrian empire fell around 600 BC - it was decimated by Persia, both physically and in population, which shows how greatly the Persians feared the possibility of it regaining its strength - they needed to make sure there would be no reprisal. Assyria continued to exist because it occupied the heartland of the Middle East, containing exceedingly fertile farmland, so the people (who survived the massacres) could still manage to feed themselves and eventually build new villages over the ruins of their great cities. Through the millenia, Assyria has managed to survive, despite repeated ransacks and plunderings and occupations.

Nineveh was at one time the world's greatest city, much greater than even Babylon (Assyria's sister nation). Although repeatedly destroyed and ransacked, it kept coming back, much like the phoenix. Assyria was one of the first countries to embrace Christianity as a national religion.

A quote from http://www.nineveh.com/WhoAreTheAssyrians.html:

"The Assyrian nation, apart from undergoing an ongoing genocide, has also suffered a cultural genocide that has attacked the Assyrian identity and questioned its origins and unity as a people. "

The book "Death of A Nation" was written about the 20th century holocaust of Assyrians and Armenians....it was much worse, and so much more complete, than what took place 20 years later with the European Jews.

From even a casual look at a 20th century events timeline, its apparent that Assyrians have been greatly wronged and repeatedly betrayed in the 20th century by both the US and British Empires.

Assyrians are an ethnic group found in what is today Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon, who are speakers of various neo-Aramaic languages. Assyrians primarily live in the Middle East, but in the past century about half of its population have migrated to the Caucasus, North America and Western Europe.

2nd answer is true. It's a tiny little unprivileged minority that no one seems to care about. Shame.
They still try to keep their old language and religion, amazing they lasted this long!
