There were many Enclosure Acts, commencing during the 16th and 17th century, mainly for drainage, etc. They began to become common after 1750, when at first, each parish that was enclosed obtained its own act - there were over 5000 Private Acts as they were known. Because this took up a great deal of time, Parliament finally passed the General Enclosure Acts of 1836, 1840 and 1846. See sources below for greater detail.
