Alright Vesdog, I might be one of the only people who actually knows what emo means. A lot of these genres have been misinterpreted and skewed over time. they have been split up in to more genres and sub genres all over. But emo actually means emotive core, don't quote me on spelling, look it up or something. Emo deals more with emotions and songs with more feeling than anything now a days. It is not about feeling like crap and cutting yourself which is what some people might tell you. punk rock is more about fast, fast music. The old, original punk rock bands' songs were more politically driven and the types of rythyms and beats they played were not heard anywhere else at the time. The original punk rock bands were the Ramones(1st ever) and the sex pistols. I guess you could say that emo and punk are sort of sub categories of alternative. Alternative is I guess a category that strays away from mainstream and normal rock. heavy and hard rock is easy. The sound is much heavier, sort of darker in attitude and tone. a good example is Guns N' Roses. Although the original band isn't around anymore, the original band wasn't quite metal, and wasn't quite mainstream. I probably have confused you more, but look some of this up on wikipedia.org, that site is a gigantic encyclopedia full of everything known to mankind, and I am completely serious. But those are good, simple explanations. Hopefully I haven't made your brain completely explode.

Okay, Emo Rock is kinda boring down tone sorta like limestone.
Punk rock is kinda like a conglomerate, wherease it's got a lot of facets and types put into one. Heavy Rock is generally of the Metallic sort, like lead or gold, and simply weighs a lot. Alternative rock, well it's like pumice, nice light but it's got a lot of holes....

alternative/punk, kinda the same.
heavy- screaming
emo- a mix of both. emo is emotional. but people mix emo and goth, where goths want to kill themselves. Trust me. I listen to emo all the time, and i don't feel one bit different. like, Taking Back Sunday is Emo.

Emo rock is whiny new age rock not too intricate pop style rock.
Punk is to the point three chord fast tracks.
Heavy is exactly as it sounds
Alternative can e anything you want it to be.
Much music is improperly labled these days so listen first and then determine for yourself.

Emo songs are all about suicide and tragic deaths because of a great tragedy and stuff like that...basically emo songs are for people who want to kill themselves.
I guess there really is no difference between these various forms of rock...just the subjects I would suppose
