In celtic culture there is an island known as tir na nog ( Im not sure of spelling) but it is said that this island is metaphor for death and eternal life. The translation would be something like " the island of eternal youthness"

There is the Island of Avalon in the Arthur myths which a island "out of time" where Arthur was brought after his battle with Mordred. It is on this island where Arthur is said to lie "sleeping" until such time that Britan again needs him.

There is also 'Tir Na Og' the celtic island of eternal youth, and the 'Summerlands' which some believe to be an island. To these islands the souls of the dead were believe to go to live out their 'between times' - in other words, to exist in bliss and experience further teachings until such time as they were reborn on the regular earth.

Albion, where Arthur was said to have been taken seems to fit that description. Culture? My guess is Celtic since the Arthur story probably originated with the Romano-British who were predominantely Christian (so would be unlikely to believe in such an isle). Many Romano-British reverted to Celtic beliefs, however, as direct Roman power declined in Britain.
