I think it is because there are black-footed ferrets in the wild in Cali. They are a completely different species, and have never been domesticated. It is feared that pet ferrets may escape and compete with the native black-foots.
It is nonsense though. Domestic ferrets couldn't survive in the wild in Cali, cos it gets far too hot. Here's a website with people campaigning for the ban to be lifted: http://www.ferretnews.org/

They'd be an environmental disaster if some went feral and started breeding. I live in Los Angeles. There are as many feral cats around as there are tame ones. Imagine adding feral ferrets to the mix. No bird would be safe.
P.S. I think it's really funny that although ferrets aren't allowed in California, just about every pet shop has an aisle of ferret toys and goodies.
P.P.S. I thought the Guvinator was supposed to legalize them.

Ferrets are not allowed in California as pets because of their weaselly long teeth and claws. However, there are a lot of ferrets in California as pets. Vets will usually enter them into the files as a cat.
If you live in California and would like a ferret, try asking around, or look at newspaper ads and Craigslist. I bet you'll find one. :)

There was a mistake a long time ago that ferrets were endangered or something, so they couldn't be kept as pets. Later on, when they found out that was wrong, California didn't want to change it because they wouldn't want to admit they were wrong. And so it stayed ever since.

i dunno...but i think they shud be. i love ferrets and they deserve their fair share of land and stuff. if u know what i mean by that. they deserve to live anywhere. do you have a ferret?

my mom used to have ferrits, she said they would attack a newborn if it ment getting milk! apparently those animals can be very dangerous!
