You can get a starter fish at your local pet store, Petco for example, and I hear Jungle land pets has pretty healthy goldfish for beginners!

Just like everyone else, I am going to tell you to go to a pet store. But when going to your local pet store (petsmart, petco, independent pet store, etc.) not only look at the fish that you are interested in, but look at the other fish in the other tanks as well. Look for any noticeable scars, fish that appear to be sick, etc. This will give you some indication on how well the fish are taken care of. Also ask when they get their shipment in. Do not buy fish that have arrived in the store recently. This way, any of the fish that were sick before they got to the pet store or any fish that had a tough time with transportation will have been weeded out (other words; died) and you will have a better chance in getting fish that won't die when you get them home.

Petsmart and Petco do NOT sell saltwater fish.
Try looking for aquarium stores in your area, use google or the yellow pages. You can probably find a specialty store that deals in saltwater fish. You can also find places online to order them, but that's risky.

yea, you can go to the petcos and other large chains. I would check out some local aquariums and stores that specialize in fish. You'll probably get a healthier fish and one that's not as susceptible to disease. These specialty stores can better help you pick your fish too.

Most pet stores carry small- salt water fish. If you were look for more exotic large salt water fish... go to your nearest pet store and they can point you in the right direction.
