Simply place the first term of the equation, using brackets or parenthesis will help to distinguish this term, then use shift and 6 to produce the following symbol... ^ This will signify that something has been raised to a power both here and everywhere else.

The caret "^" symbol is used to show exponentiation. An example is y^2 means "y squared".

You can also use superscripts which look nicer. They can be found in the character map or in Word, but you are limited to the numbers 1 thru 3. An example is y².

Since simple text editors cannot superscript, The caret [^] has been adopted to show exponentiation. This appears to be pretty much worldwide now. So, you type (expression)^(power). The parentheses are not always necessary, but must be used when there is a possibility of ambiguity.
