Weather patterns vary widely year to year.

In the late 1800's (like 1892 or something like that) there was a year that was called, "The year without a summer" and in the American Northeast snow was recorded in EVERY month. The average summer temp was less than 70 degrees.

So based on the last 100 years or so, no snow can be as common as lots of snow. Give it time and Philly will see a blizzard again.

Personally, I am enjoying our last couple years of little snow. Here in Michigan we got slammed in the late 90's and I don't miss it at all.

It's El Nino.

Typically the upper level flow splits in strong El Nino years. The southern branch keeps moisture to the south and to the north cold air is trapped in Canada and Northern Plains. On occasion the branhes can 'squeeze' together and produce a deep low pressure system, but typically (see last week and this coming week) these storms bring lots of rain with no cold air entering the system to produce snow.

I wouldn't lose hope yet there is still 2-3 months of winter left and plenty of storms systems will develop in that time. One (or more!) may get lucky and drop snow over PHL.

I wish I knew. I live in Michigan. Denver got it last week and it looks like it will again. We are looking at more rain. Scary.
