I highly recommend the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. All were published in the 50's and are excellent for 10 year olds.

The Freddy the Pig series. I used to read those when I was a kid. I'm reading them to my grandson now because they are republishing some of them.

Some of the book titles are (not in any particular order)

Freddy Goes to Florida
Freddy Goes to the North Pole
Freddy the Detective
Freddy the Politician
Freddy's Cousin Weedley

There is actually a website for Freddy the Pig that your grade schooler might enjoy (as well as yourself).

Try the Nancy Drew books, The Bobbsey Twins, The Hardy Boys- that type of book seems to have been very popular back then
