The video card is an ATI Rage Pro. The monitor is a Viewsonic Q19 wsg. The ATI does not accept custom resolutions. It is very hard to figure out from the Web which cards support 1440x900.
It looks like Nvidia cards can be set to custom resolutions, but is that ALL nvidia cards? I don't need a super fast card, because I don't game. Suggestions?

All recent video cards can be set to custom resolutions. You just right click on the desktop, click properties, then click settings, then find resolution towards the bottom and move the bar according to your resolution.
If that wasn't your problem then you need a new video card.. There are tons of video cards that are cheap , super fast and can support that resolution.

nvidia is way better than ATi. I've listed a couple links where you can get a video card that can support those resolutions. All the video cards can support your resolution.

Compusa is having a sale on a nvidia mx4000 (9.99) http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?pfp=SEARCH&Ntt=mx4000&N=0&Dx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&D=mx4000&Ntk=All&product_code=333527&Pn=GF_MX4000_Video_Card
and it can support your resolution I checked http://dealnews.com/deals/3-D-Fuzion-Ge-Force-6200-128-MB-DDR-AGP-Video-Card-for-24-after-rebate/133250.html?ref=rss_dealnews_today

last but not least tiger direct. They have great deals on video cards. I recomend the diablotek nvidia 6600 its 79.99 with a one year warranty or 69.99 without a warranty. If you want something cheaper get a nvidia 6200, 7200, 7300 video card

Didn't anyone tell you, the ATi Rage pro is ancient. I'm not surprised it doesn't accept the higher resolution, not surprised at all. Don't need a fast card... fine... get yourself a Radeon 9550 for $50, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814121511 if you're stuck on ATi or if you want to go nvidia get a Geforce 6200 for $37, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814121542

Those are AGP cards, I assumed that the Rage Pro actually came in an AGP version but it's so old that it probably came in PCI variants as well. If you aren't sure which one you have, open up your case and look. PCI slots will be white, AGP slots can either be brown or green and will be offset from the PCI slots. That's the easiest way I know of to check.

Get an NVidia card. I use to buy only ATI cards, but when I ran into the same problem I picked up the cheapest card I could find (an NVidia 6600 PCI-E for about 50 bucks) and it works WAY, WAY better then my ATI x700 card ever did.

It also outputs a much better picture to my HDTV. I don't think I'm ever buying a ATI card again.
