The leaflet recommends to leave the lava lamp on for no more than 4 hours at a time but it takes at least 5 hours to show movement. Is it safe to leave it on for long periods of time?

The oil needs to heat up. Use a hair dryer to help it get warm but you must not try this at home. Do it in a soundproof room (to muffle your screams when the lamp explodes and you're covered in boiling oil). Make sure you have the fire service standing by, paramedics on scene and that you have left a note explaining to your husband why he no longer has a hairdryer or a wife for that matter. If you are satisfied that you have met all the above criteria go ahead, but most of all don't blame me if you can't get a refund if it goes pearshaped (literally).

I used to have a small lava lamp...it took two hours to heat up and they said dont have on more than one hour, long as you dont have it close to anything it'll be fine. I used to keep mine on all night, careful it will get hot though. have fun with it.

ya the oil has to heat up - the more oil you have to longer its going to take - i dont see any reason why it should not be let on for more than 4 hours - if not happy with it - return the lamp

because the oil inside the lamp needs to heat up the larger the lamp the more oil so therfore it takes longer to heat up

exchange it or get a refund it's not working

try not to place it in a cold place, mine used to take hours also. i put it away from draughty areas and it worked better.

This usually happens when they are new,it'll be O.K. after a while.
