Art has a long tradition in ancient and modern history. Often works of art are singular objects which can be contemplated and enjoyed. Given the massive tourism that famous art generates, it is a weak argument to say art is the entertainment of the elites. A work of art can be evaluated in light of other works, and the work has an individual message also. Every work of art says something different, but schools of art have theories to explain the tradition. Contemporary art is frequently technological-oriented to examine the nature of a society made of scientific tools.

It is all semantics, art is entertainment but for people who are collectors of oil paintings, or sculptures they want to look in the Art section, it helps cut down on the search. Carpentry is an art, embroidery is an art, and acrobat is an artist and an actor is as well. Making movies is an art too. But it is a matter of opinion as well. And people have plenty of those.

The thing that differentiates art from entertainment is $$$.
Take it as truth from a starving artist who is in the adult entertainment business because of empty cupboards.

art, in theory, is more sophisticated. The performance/modern artists kinda screwed that one up though. Now, art is created to shock, and entertainment is created to... entertain.

Is"art the entertainment of the elites?" please. The difference between art and entertainment is your opinion, which is why we have the first amendment and scores upon scores of liberal arts colleges to examine such questions.
