not in a first person sense- unless its a quote, at which point you can use I or the rest
basically, make sure that we, etc applies to a wider majority, not anything specific, try asking the professor to make sure

If you are writing a research essay it probably should not refer to a person such as yourself, that would go along with not using the word "I". So, I would suggest not using that word either.

Technically, no. Research essays should be written in the passive voice. However, following that rule makes research essays sound like, well, research essays. There are times when faithful adherence to the passive voice scrambles the sentence so badly it's practically unintelligible (those horrible run-ons that you read a dozen times and still go WHAT??? at the end of it).

As a matter of style, academic research essays should remain objective. "We, us, our and your" are generally discouraged because they lend themselves to opinion statements and bland generalizations ('Since Plato we have wondered about the nature of reality').
Referring to the reader using these words can also be dangerous, because it anticipates how they will respond to your statement. It may be easier to understand this if you read your essay from the point of view of a professor who might disagree with you.

I really wouldn't go there if I were you.
I'm assuming that because you can't use "I" it's a proper essay, so personally I'd stay clear of "your", "we", anything that includes you or the reader.
It makes the essay cleaner looking, more professional.

I don't think you are supposed to. You'll probably get docked points. You better stick to third person(he, she, it) instead of first person (I, me, us, we) or second person (you)
