I don't know how helpful this answer will be, but...at the university I go to there is a Student Org called CMISS and they do programs for minorities like asians, latinos, and blacks, and there is this group of people that organized this thing called Neo-Poetry and every Thursday they all chill in the coffee shop and sing songs by Common Sense, Erykah Badu, and so on and so forth, and they also read poetry. most of the people that attend are black people and those who listen to that genre of music, and too me Neo-Soul is a way of expressing ones self in a way that a person who listens to it and hears it can understand and relate to. A lot oc music people can relate to, I'm sure, but Neo-Soul type music and Poetry is songs about life and beauty and hope and being who you are and not letting society change you. For example the other week, this one guy did a poem and used the song "can you hear me now" (i think that the name) and he used the song and his poem together to talk about society and the government looking down on people with AIDS/HIV and women who get abortions in the alleys because of insurance/money/poverty, and how the society shunes people who aren't like them.
So i hope that helped...but to me neo-soul is expressing ones self to get the attention of non-believers, and uins real life to open peoples hearts and minds. Along with the hardships and challenges one faces in life, as well as the good things and being hopeful and beauty and life it self.
