Hello Stuffy:

You could be right on both counts" it could be your water softener and it is time to apply some preventive maintenance towards it. Then again, it could be your septic system if you are experiencing sulfur or methane odors. If it is septic you could try an enzyme for the septic system and look for standing surface water in the area of your leach field and possibly some vegetation such as plant growth. If the sewer system you are on is not showing signs of backing-up while under use, I would begin with the water softener first. However; It wasn't mentioned in your question if you are on well water and not a public water system. If you are on a well it may be time to drill a new vertical well at a much deeper depth one that is further away from your septic system. This could explain the sulfur odor you are experiencing your well may be at a shallow depth and possibly being contaminated by the septic system. If so; have the water laboratory tested. Your public health department should be able to assist you.

Check to see if one of the traps in your drain system has emptied of water, the water is the seal that prevents sewer gas from coming back from your septic tank. you may have several of these in you drainage system . like under the kitchen sink,Bathtub, wash basin, laundy room etc.

This sounds like sewer gas is backing up into the house. Dump about one gallon of water into every drain in your house. Don't forget any floor drains you may have. This will replentish the water seal and the smell should go away.

Are you sure you not cooking eggs ??/ lol !!! - sometimes septice tanks can smell if it is not covered properly - if you are using natural gas for cooking or heating, there could be a leak in the line somewhere

good luck
