George Lucas was a big fan of the old movie serials of the 40' and 50's. When he made the first Star Wars film he wanted to try and capture that same magic that those old shows he grew up with had.
That is why he choose to label the first movie Episode 4. The text scrolling off into the horizon at the first of the movie was stolen from the old Flash Gordon Serials with Buster Crabbe. Each episode would have scrolling text (the same style) at the beginning to remind the audience what had happed before. Lucas used that as a device to make Star Wars seem like a piece of a bigger story.
It is true that Lucas wrote out an outline for a multipart epic. He did this so that he could have all the details correct and so that he could write Star Wars so that it felt like one episode of on old serial. At the time Lucas had not plans to do a sequel to Star Wars, much less 6 or 9 movies.
In the DVD commentary Lucas said that there were so many problems during the filming of SW that he did not think he would ever be allowed to make another movie, much less another Star Wars movie.
When Star Wars was released, and became an overnight sensation Lucas was able to start really thinking about making more Star Wars movies. He took the outline he developed of the other episodes and began developing them into movie scripts. That is when he developed the idea of three trilogies. One day he may complete the project with Episodes 7, 8 and 9 he has left it open saying, he might, or he might not.

George Lucas wrote the original Star Wars trilogy with a prequel and a sequel trilogy planned. The original Star Wars movie almost was not made because he couldn't get a company to back him. Finally Fox helped him out and it was a success which spurred the making of the other two films in the trilogy. Sadly, Lucas does not plan to film the last sequel trilogy, but there are plans in the making for a spinoff television series that will cost approxiately $! million per episode.

When originally conceived, it was a nine-film series, broken into trilogy blocks.
Thre were the pre films, the center films and the post films (the last three would address the return of the republic and the problems with trying to govern all this)

It's quite complex, but at first Lucas initially had FIFTEEN stories about the whole Star Wars world, he then took one of these and made it into a film. He then planned to make 12 films chronicalling the adventures, then reduced this to 9.
He made the original trilogy, then went back and made prequels (I assume he didn't know how he'd make sequels considering all the bad guys were dead).

i cant believe the story that he wrote all the film story lines but had to cut them short so conceived the original star wars film - then when it took off decided to make to rest back to front - no - i think he maybe had the 1st two lined up - then added the rest to keep Hollywood studios happy and make more money

when george wrote the story, he wrote an outline that included three trilogies. He didn't think he could get the money to start from the beginning so he started with episode 4. He doesn't think he's going to worry about 7,8, and 9.

i think i read the same as moviegirl, originally wrote/conceived of 9 films but thought the middle 3 would be the best to make/get funding for.

I read on the internet- that it was not only until after the success of the first weekend box office, that they put
Episode IV in front of it.
I dont know how true that is, or not.
