I had my battery out of my laptop for a few months. When I put it back in it won't charge up when I plug in the laptop. The light goes on so I know it's "reading" it but it won't charge up (keeps displaying 0% but says it's charging). It's a Gateway 2 yr old laptop if that helps.

Thanks.

batteries have what is called a charge memory, yours is either dead or thinks it is charged. To break the cycle you need to force a discharge. Try plugging in the laptop and running a movie or something that will take a long time, the only other way is a ramp charger that forces the memory to break, but I have not seen one for a laptop battery, however you can search on this on the net.

There are currently three types of batteries commonly used for laptops: Nickel Cadmium, Nickel Metal Hydride, and Lithium Ion.

A battery needs to be charged and discharged fully, when we keep a battery ideal for long time (few months), its difficult to regain the same stand by time again, first try to charge it fully once...keep it open in sunlight for few hours again use it on Adapter mode for few weeks..check is it possible it get some backup time otherwise better to change it.

Take it to Radio Shack or Circuit City. They have a battery reader.
