The others got it right about Hangar 18. The UFO/Flying Saucher may actually have been a top secret Luftwaffe saucer shaped airplane/hovercraft. In the late 1950's, the USAF developed a flying saucer airplane that was supposed to carry strategic nuclear bombs. Although I think there are probably Extra-Terrestrial, since we've found hundreds of new extra-solar planets, (many of the newly discovered solar systems are much older than the solar system) they're probably millions of years more advance than the human race not centuries ahead.

So I don't think they would be that stupid to leave a scout ship there for the human race to find. Area 51 was probably a proving ground or testing site for the Air Force's new x-planes which they may have made copies off from captured Luftwaffe planes like the Soviets did.
