I would say that if it was attempted there would be rough times ahead. I would not suggest the U.S trying it. Many things go through partial production there, or are fully produced and then imported. Many companies outsource to foreign countries, like China. We could survive, surly, but the economy would take a major hit. There are always other countries that would work for pennies to do what we wont, but there is also another issue. These other countries would see that we shafted China and think we have a superiority complex (which many already think the U.S. does). There is also a noneconomic problem. China's army is larger than ours, much larger, I don't suggest pissing them off.

This is a complicated question. In truth it will most likely be China that ends up doing the most harm to the US economy. Most Americans are under the mistaken conception that China is a poor country that makes cheap crap for us to by at wal mart. Nothing is more further from the truth. In fact the US is in a LOT of debt to China. When the US removed its dollar from the gold standard in the early seventies it created a debt system where we could borrow money now and repay it later with a weaker dollar. In essence if i borrow a dollar from you today and have to repay it in ten years i will still owe you a dollar but a much weaker dollar therefore making my repayment much cheaper to me in terms of pure buying power. We have been borrowing mass amounts of money to run our country and repaying these loans later with a weaker currency. The Chinese have been quietly going around the world buying up US debt. This is ordinarily not a big deal except the Chinese have pegged their currency to the dollar, ensuring that the amount of money we have to pay back is equal to the amount that we borrowed. The US is still spending money we do not have at record rates. Economist know that there is a looming danger on the horizon from China if we dont influence Beijing to unpeg their currency from the dollar or reign in spending. The ramifications could mean a bankrupt American economy with no manufacturing base to fall back on (we exported that a long time ago).

Oh yes!
There are other countries that will do our work for us for pennies on the dollar. It will take much more then the Chinese people to quit working for us get get us to stop putting out the products that we do, if it is not China it will be another country.
China needs our money, if they dint they would not be working for us....
It is a two way street, China needs our money and we use there products...if they ever would stop, we would just go somewhere else.

Yes, it can surive without China, but inflation would surge as a result of higher prices for comsumer electronics, toys, other goods, and people that were in high skilled service sector jobs would have to shift back to manfuctauring goods that China used to provide, and it probadly be something both sides would not want to see. Dollar value would plummet and it would not pretty.

It could but it would take a big hit! Wal-mart would have to find new suppliers, Dow Jones average takes a hit when Wal-mart stock drops. Investors run scared and sell off their holdings. Gold is already too expensive. Home sales tank, prices drop below what people owe. Foreclosures go up, bank profits go down, stock market goes down more. Everyone tries to figure out how to grow a garden, anarchy reigns....
But have a Happy New Year!

Wording is the key here.
Survive - of course. But survival is not quite the same as prosper.
What does US want? To maintain and advance its imperialist role on global arena. To do that, your economy must be flourishing.
