If it is a new notebook than it most certainly has wireless installed. A common misconception a lot of my customers have is that wireless works everywhere. Wireless will only work if is close enough to get a signal from a wireless access point. you will have to determine if your notebook has a wireless adaptor first. If not than you can obtain one from a local retail store. they will be able to help. Just take your notebook with you when you go. Next you will have to add a wireless router to your current Broadband Internet. These are a little tricky to install but they are do-able even if you aren't to computer savvy. If you have DSL you will need your user name and password to get started. Another way to go wireless is to get a card that uses the cell towers to connect. They are a lot more expensive and you pay by the Kb for service, but you can use them literally anywhere you can get cell service.

Does your new laptop have a built-in wireless network card?

If so and you already have a DSL or cable modem connection, then you can get yourself a Linksys or D-Link router that has support for wireless connections and use that as your firewall and home network setup.

If your new laptop only has a wired network card, you can either replace it or add a wireless network card and then use the router as suggested above.

There are three common standards I see in the stores for wireless networks (in order of older to newer):

- 802.11b
- 802.11g
- 802.11n

The 802.11n is pretty new and could be considered "bleeding edge" technology. You should be satisfied buying anything that has the 802.11g standard.

And it is usually advisable to try and get the same network cards as your router to make it easier to set up. However, it is not usually an absolute requirement.

You need a wireless card that plugs into the side of your laptop and a wireless modem plugged into your phone line. Future shop has some great deals on them. Be sure the unit you get is compatible with your machine and your Internet service provider.

If you have a PC at home then attaching a router and setting the PC to allow other computers to connect through that will do the trick, but you need a wireless card either build in to the lap top or one of these.. http://www.netgear.co.uk/rangemax_wirelesscard_wpn511.php
You can also get a USB version but i would stay away from them.
With out a PC at home you will need one of these Set's http://www.misco.co.uk/productinformation/~Q66517~WW~/Linksys%20Wireless-G%2054Mbps%20ADSL2/2+%20Modem%20Router.htm its all very straight forward after that as the paper work that comes with the product will help you. after buying one of these options then it would just be another question away if you had problems.

Do you have a Wi-Fi card (internal or external)?
Also you must have a Wireless router
(or go yo a place with a signal)

If you do you can connect right away.

If you dont you need to get a Wi-Fi card...

You can view your connections in the control panel, under network connections.
