In the next 10-15 years I see diesel-electric hybrid SUV's and trucks running on either propane/CNG, biodiesel or both. Almost all gasoline engines running on 50-100% ethanol.

Piezo-electric valvetrains with infinitely variable valve timing instead of camshafts, laser ignition instead of spark plugs. Direct injection gasoline/ethanol engines will be the standard the way port injection is now.

Greater use of lightweight alloys and plastics. Cars and trucks will be 15-20% lighter but safer than ever. High voltage electrical systems will have completely replaced current systems to support more accesories and entertainment in the car. Navigation systems will be much more foolproof and easy to use.

All-electric commuter cars will be at least as common as hybrids are now.

Safety glass will be replace with space-age plastics that can tint when the sun is brighter and lessen glare from headlights without decreasing visibility for night driving.

More emphasis on safety and emissions.

More options for customizing cars from the factory. You will be able to customize a color on the internet and order the car painted that way from the factory.

Platform/part sharing will be on a massive scale and there will be even fewer truly independant car companies, if any.

In 2009 most of the vehicles we see on the road today will still be producing the same models with slight variations. The Smart will be here, but that will have a very limited following. No cars will fly by then, no massive changes in public transportation will happen by then. In fact my 2006 Mercedes will not even be paid off by then.

I don't think they will get to the flying by 2009. Concept cars that are coming out now won't even be in production until 2010.

By 2009? Are you kidding? Some 2008 models have already begun production. Are you saying that by next year they will be mass producing flying cars?

The automobile industry will continue to expand on gas mileage and convenience. Look for more technology (Wi-Fi, bluetooth, more advance GPS, etc.) to make it's way into cars.
