I really enjoyed this book! It's a post modern take on the world of fiction and the rest of the series just gets better. I liked the bizarre twists on history, I liked the idea of being able to jump into books and meet characters. This book is better if you've read Jane Eyre as it mirrors the plot line in a few places. I love names like Acheron Hades because of the way it references the literary world to describe a character. I would say this book and the rest of the books in the series excellent for any lover of books, I'm an English major and I'm sure that I've missed half the references in there. But lit isn't the only reference in there, if you're a history buff you know exactly how little things in history made big and how that changes this fictional world.
Basically I think this is a very smart book, loads of fun, very imaginitive, silly and serious, and generally a good read. I hope you enjoy it or have enjoyed it.

I do agree that you have to be well read to get the in-jokes but it is one of the most original books I have read in a long time. Jasper fforde's writing style also makes the books very easy to read.

The book is brilliant, tiz ages since I've read it. Have read all his books, and yes..you have to be well read to "get" some of the literary references, but they just make the book even more funny. The big over easy is maybe a little easier to pick up the references, as they are to nursery rhymes, etc, that most people know.

It was good, but the time-travelling got a little too confusing for me. Also, I'm not well-read enough to get all the literary jokes, but I am well-read enough to recognize that they're there, which was frustrating, but not the author's fault. :)

Loved it, and the other Thursday Next books, not so keen on the 'Nursery Crime' books though.
