Spelunking is the sport of exploring caves and caverns. It could be considered an extreme sport in some cases, since it is very easy to get lost or injured, particularly in unexplored caverns. However, there are a lot of very well explored caves (Cave of the Winds, Mamoth Cave, etc.) that have easy tourist routes with guided tours and little chance of getting lost.

It is also an enormous amount of fun. I recommend Glenwood Cavern in Colorado as a good place to start, since they offer several levels of tour, from tame to adventurous.

The correct way to spell it is "spelunking" and is also known as caving, the recreational sport of exploring caves. Speleology is the scientific study of caves and the cave environment.

The challenges of the sport depend on the cave being visited, but often include the negotiation of pitches, squeezes, and water. Climbing or crawling is often necessary, and ropes are used extensively.

Caving is often undertaken for the enjoyment of the activity or for physical exercise, but original exploration, or physical or biological science is an important goal for many cavers.

It is not really a sport, but rather the (often athletic) leisure activity of exploring caves.

EDIT: Okay, upon further research, it appears that many people do, in fact, classify it as a sport. Whatever-- if spelunking is a sport, then so is hiking through the woods. It certainly isn't a COMPETITIVE sport, but to me, the phrase "competitive sport" is redundant anyway, and only competitive athletic activities should be classified as such.

To each his own, though. "Sport" is apparently in the eye of the beholder, so it's up to you to decide.

It is the exploring of caves and caverns. A dangerous sport or hobby if not well ready for it.

Cave exploring. (It's spelled Spelunking)

Clay Perry — an American caver of the 1940s — wrote about a group of men and boys who explored and studied caves throughout New England. This group referred to themselves as spelunkers. This is regarded as the first use of the word in the Americas. Throughout the 1950s, spelunking was the general term used for exploring caves in US English. It was used freely, without any positive or negative connotations, although only rarely outside the US.

In the 1960s, the term "spelunking" began to convey the idea of inexperienced cavers, using unreliable light sources and cotton clothing. In 1985, Steve Knutson (editor of American Caving Accidents) made the following distinction:

"...Note that I use the term 'spelunker' to denote someone untrained and unknowledgeable in current exploration techniques, and 'caver' for those who are."
This sentiment is exemplified by bumper stickers and t-shirts displayed by many cavers: "Cavers rescue spelunkers".
