Test of Engligh as a foreign language.

The purpose of the test is to evaluate the English proficiency of people whose native language is not English. The scores are required for purposes of admission by more than 2,400 colleges in the United States and Canada.

The computer-based TOEFL test has four sections.

Listening -- Measures ability to understand English as it is spoken in North America.

Structure -- Measures ability to recognize language that is appropriate for standard written English.

Reading -- Measures ability to read and understand short passages similar in topic and style to those that students are likely to encounter in North American universities and colleges.

Writing -- Measures ability to write in English on an assigned topic. In this section, you will have an opportunity to demonstrate your ability to write in English. This includes the ability to generate and organize ideas, to support those ideas with examples or evidence, and to compose in standard written English in response to an assigned topic.

Test of English as a Foreign Language.

Now in most places only available as the Internet-based test (which is NOT the same as the Computer-based test described above). It is given entirely on computer, including the writing (must be keyed in) and speaking (spoken into a headset) sections.

Reading section: read about 5 passages and answer about 12 questions (mostly multiple-choice, some click-here)

Listening section: listen to about 5 conversations and lectures and answer questions about them (multiple choice).

Speaking section: 2 independent tasks (give your opinion on a given subject), 2 listening and speaking, and 2 reading/listening/speaking tasks (in all but one of these you don't give your opinion, but just explain what you've heard/read).

Writing section: (task 1) read a passage, listen to a lecture on the same topic, in 20 minutes write about the different ideas discussed.

AND (task 2) in 30 minutes, write an essay expressing your opinion on a given subject.

Each section is worth 30 points and then they just add the scores to give a total score up to 120.
