Does anybody know how to get the service engine light to shut off on a 2000 regal. I was driving the other day and it came on. Car runs fine and not running hot or anything. I thought there may be a trick to get it to turn off but not sure. thanx.

I can't remember which, but I could swear I remember seeing a commercial a bit back about one of those auto-parts stores (Either Auto Zone, Pep Boys, or Advance Auto) which will offer a free diagnostic test that will find out exactly why the check engine light is on.

I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I've seen and heard about check engine lights coming on for the most mundane of reasons. Anyway, it couldn't hurt to check out the aforementioned auto parts shops to find out if one of them will run a free diagnostic.

If the code is pending you can't just reset the ECU because the info is committed to an EPROM memory chip. You need a code reader. 150.00 but a wise investment. Not only can you read and erase codes yourself. but, when you do go to a mechanic you already have an idea of what's wrong and can cut down on freud.
p.s. disconnecting the battery only screws up the clock on the radio. It's a waste of time.
