I'm only around level 9... and I'm about to go through the Dreadnought Leviathan for the first time. I've gone through a couple of times already and ended up losing 2 of my party members while the other 2 remained in critical health.

What are the recommended preparations for this segment? Vaan has a javelin equipped, and (along with Fran) is able to use Cure, Protect, Slow, Immobilize, Poisona, and the three basic Black Magic spells.

I have to agree with the others on this one. Level Nine is kinda low for this area because the new character that you gain in this area is around Level Fifteen. First, you need more licenses, so more of your characters can use magic, such as Cure. If only a few of your characters are able to cure, you're in for a rough ride. All characters should be able to recover their health on their own.

I cannot remember who is your guest character in this scenario, but they are your best character. They usually can cause the most damage, or have the best gambits. Cast Protect on that person, and be certain that they stay alive. A quickening for at least one person would come in handy, and so would the Technick Charge. SInce quickenings deplete MP, Charge is invaluable.

Like the others said, there are some difficult boss fights on this ship, and the second one is rougher than the first one. At a higher level than you, I had some trouble with the second boss. If you can manage it, trying to level up before going too far in the game. Obtain licenses like Martyr, Inquistor, and Last Defense to augment your MP and defense in times of need. Also, consider getting licenses that boost your max HP, which can obviously help you stay alive. If you can, flock to a Save Point to fully cure yourself.

With your characters being so weak, it will extremely difficult to get out of this area, but not at all impossible. If you get it, consider leveling up a little before you continue on with the story. There is an powerful flying enemy that you have to fight not too long after the Dreadnought Leviathan that has served up some truly spectacular whuppings of my butt before I finally beat it.

Honestly, I got greedy for liscenses before I was even close to the dreadnought, and was probably about lvl. 15 or 20 when I went through.....I thought it was a cakewalk. I would level up some more, level 9 sounds pretty skimpy, especially if I remember correctly there's a fairly tough boss battle at the end. Get some more support liscenses first, like some HP+ and even Inquisitor and Matyr can be a big help too.
