you can get a faster processor with the same socket type that will fit in your motherboard, but the improvement will be minimal without upgrading your memory too.

so basically, to make your upgrade worth the money you'll spend, you'll have to buy a new processor, motherboard, and memory. now is the time to switch to intel, since the Core 2 Duos are the best processors in the world.

i'm in the same boat as you. i'd love to upgrade my aging Pentium, but i won't do it until i have enough money to buy a new mobo and memory with it.

You will have to see what your motherboard can handle. You will definitely need to use an AMD chip though, either Athlon or Duron.

It's according to what motherboard you have and what cpu socket you have. Like slot a, socket a, am2, etc. and what chipset. Knowing the motherboard model, you can look up what the motherboard can handle, upgrade to.

With a faster chip of the same socket type, otherwise, you're replaceing mobo, chip and ram.
