I am in the same situation you are in. The only problem is I am 23 years of age which to me, may be a little old to start. I stated studying computers and earn my bachelor. I, however, recently realized that I am no longer passionate as I was back then for computers. I am thinking in going into theaters, it's more outgoing and fun and, I consider myself very shy but I don't give a damn. I am going to pursue it if this is what I was really made for. Let go of your fears, and go along with the flow. By the way, how old are you?

Take the classes. all actors and actresses have to start from somewhere. Once you take classes they'll teach you not to be shy and stuff. Usually I'm kind of shy with public speaking, but when on stage it's really different. When your passionate about something, and you love doing, everything just fades away. I've wanted to act since I was 3 years old, and it's one of the passions of my life. I love it. Just take the classes, and if you really are determined into acting, then you will go far. ^^ Also, don't worry bout the whole narcissist persona. A lot of actors and actresses that I know aren't. They always find their faults in their last performance, but when they find them, the next time they try to correct them. It's like practicing a sport. Try it and if you like it continue it.

The only way one can overcome shyness is just to do it. The more repetition, the less shy you'll be and the more confident you become. But the bottom line is... if you want to act, then shyness is not an option. Or at best, learn how to overcome it in moments when you need to be confident. That is... ACT! Everything about the profession works against being shy. But sometimes acting requires that you "act" confident even when you're not.
So, how do you go about it? First, determine in yourself that being shy is no longer an option for you should you choose to pursue this career path. Second, act confident even if you're not. That's "acting"... and perhaps that's your first biggest challenge.
Then, find an acting class or get in the school play ;-)

I've been performing for a couple of years, and I still feel shy and nervous every time! Boost your confidence by taking classes, get involved with community theatre, even stuff like getting up at a karaoke night with your friends can give you confidence, cos even if you can't sing and you make an *** out of yourself, you'll realise it's not the end of the world!
It can be intimidating starting something new, especially with people who have been involved for a while. But everyone has to start somewhere! I auditioned for my first ever musical and got a lead- I didn't think I'd get anything, but I went for the hell of it. It goes to show that sometimes you can surprise yourself, so go for it-and have fun!! that's the main thing. :)
