I'm going to begin going to a tanning salon in a week or two. Are there any safety precautions I should take, and are there any hazards?

Always wear eye protection, most places provide this... or they allow you to purchase it there for about $1. I think it's a law to wear them. Don't stay in too long, especially your first time. The best thing to do is to tell the person that is working that it is your first time tanning. They can then look at your skin tone and tell you how long you should stay in the bed. Make sure to give it a day or so before going back to the salon because you don't want to get a bad burn. Use tanning lotion while in the bed, you can buy this at the salon. It helps to give you a better tan because when your skin is dry it doesn't tan as well.

Just make sure you go to a clean place. If you have doubts either clean it yourself (most places leave the cleaning products in the room for this reason), or don't lie. Also be sure to start out slow. 20 minutes is the max and if you haven't tanned in a while, even if you never burn, you will burn in a tanning bed. I recomend starting with 5-8 minutes and working your way up. After each session if you are not burned, then add a minute or two. I personally keep a towel or something over my face (except for 1 or 2 minutes), because I don't want to look like a leather purse when I'm 30, but that's just me. As far as laying nude or in a suit, that's up to you! Happy Tanning!

Make sure you bring eye protection. Most salons will not let you in tanning if you do not have this. It is very important for your eyes to be covered and safe. Also, make sure you bring some kind of lotion so you don't burn and your skin doesnt dry out. Make sure you clean the bed/booth before AND after you use it. Some people do not clean it when they are done, so I always clean it before I get in there. If you have any other worries/questions, ask the people that work there, they will help you. :)

Don't tan every day. Only tan twice, maybe three times a week until you get your base coat. Then tan only once or twice a week to keep it. If you over tan you could end up looking like shoe leather.

it is concentrated light, good source of skin cancers, suggest you would be much wiser to use one of the many tanning creams available on the market to get that golden glow and leave the tanning booths alone.
