I have heard that the day of the former President Ford's funeral service will be recognized at a one-time Federal holiday and will interrupt mail delivery, etc. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Thanks!

Bush Declares Jan. 2 a Day of Mourning to Honor Ford (Update4)

By William McQuillen

Dec. 28 (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush declared Jan. 2 to be a national day of mourning after the death this week of former President Gerald R. Ford.

Bush ordered government agencies and departments to close that day, except for offices essential to national security. The Nasdaq Stock Market announced it will close to honor Ford, and the New York Stock Exchange also may shut. The last declared day of mourning was after former President Ronald Reagan's death in 2004, White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said.

For the day of mourning marking Reagan's passing, government offices and U.S. financial markets closed as the nation's attention was focused on the funeral. The NYSE hasn't made an announcement on its schedule.

Ford, who rose to the presidency after the resignation of President Richard Nixon in 1974, died Dec. 26 at his home in Rancho Mirage, California. He was 93.

Bush will leave his ranch home in Crawford, Texas, on Jan. 1 to fly back to Washington and attend the viewing of Ford's casket at the U.S. Capitol. The president will speak at Ford's memorial service on Jan. 2.

The NYSE, owned by New York-based NYSE Group Inc., has been closed at least part of the day for every presidential funeral since William McKinley's in 1901, according to the exchange's Web site.

The Federal Reserve said late today that it will delay the release of minutes from the December meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee because of the mourning day for Ford. The minutes will be issued at 2 p.m. on Jan. 3, a day later than previously scheduled.

Ford's Honors

Ford's body is scheduled to arrive at the Capitol for public viewing from Dec. 30 until his memorial service on Jan. 2. He will be the 30th person so honored, a tradition that started in 1852 with the death of Henry Clay, a senator and secretary of state, according to the architect of the Capitol's Web site.

Bush's proclamation encourages Americans to go to places of worship to ``pay homage to the memory of President Ford.'' Following his memorial service at the National Cathedral, Ford's body will be flown to Grand Rapids, Michigan, for a family service.

Ford served in the U.S. House from Michigan from 1949 until 1973, when Nixon chose him as vice president.

Monuments and memorials, modern neighbourhoods, correct local taste it's this that Washington, DC is; a location unlike every other; exactly like this web site hotelbye . Washington it's your house abroad with free museums and America's entrance yard. Washington is acknowledged around the world as a symbol of the United States. Here, the area you cannot skip could be the Capitol. Capitol may be the seat of the House of Representatives and the Senate. The huge dome, based on the dome of St. Peter's in Rome, stands out especially other Washington buildings. Like Washington itself, the developing has grown through the years considering that the central portion was built between 1793 and 1812. The final supplement, in 1958-62, increased the key façade wherever presidents get the oath. On the other side, a marble terrace offers beautiful opinions over the mall and the city. The interior is resplendent with frescoes, reliefs, and paintings, especially the rotunda underneath the great cast-iron dome with a threshold painting by Constantino Brumidi and big paintings of scenes from American history on the walls.

OPM news release says Tuesday will be a Federal Holiday. Here in Grand Rapids the main Post Office is just around the corner from the Ford Museum. The ceremonies in Grand Rapids are on Wednesday so traffic could be an issue. LOTS of mail and late dispatches to the branch Post Offices from the main office. Looks like it's going to be a long day.

The last 2 former Presidents' funerals were observed by giving Federal Employees the day off to mourn their former President.
I am sure that they will honor Gerald Ford the same way by giving the Postal Employees,Federal employees the day off. That would include banks ,and state offices also.
I am guessing that it will be on Jan. 2nd,now i just heard on CNN that it will be on Saturday.
I don't know yet about mail delivery and/or Federal Govt.,which is usually closed on Saturday anyway. Maybe it will be on Friday..
I have CNN on..stay tuned..Cnn just said that there is a press conference coming up shortly..at 4:04 est..2:04 Mst 1:04 p.m. pst

The president has to issue a proclamation in order for federal employees to have the day off as a day of mourning. Typically, it's to reduce the almost crippling congestion in DC due to the influx of visitors and dignitaries that converge on the city during a presidential funeral. Keep an eye on whitehouse.gov or opm.gov for an official announcement regarding this issue. Keep in mind that essential personnel, such as staff at VA medical centers are still on duty. I don't know if mail carriers are exempt or not.

Yes

"CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - President Bush on Thursday declared January 2 a "National Day of Mourning" for former President Gerald Ford who died this week.

The declaration means that federal offices will be closed on Tuesday.

"I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President Ford," Bush said in a proclamation.

Ford's body will be flown to Washington on Saturday and his casket will lie in state at the Capitol. A service will be held at the National Cathedral on Tuesday at which Bush will speak, White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said.

Bush will return to Washington on Monday from spending the holiday week at his ranch in Texas and with his wife, Laura, go to the Capitol to pay respects to Ford, Stanzel said."
