I had my period two weeks ago, and I always take my ortho-tricyclen pills that sunday of my period...I am a really busy person, and always miss a pill here and there, but have never gotten pregnant from that. For example if i miss monday i take two on tuesday, or if i miss monday and tuesday i take two on wednesday, and two on thursday if that makes sense.. that is what the pamphlet says..i have never had any real problems, except bad nausea, but this is the first time ever ( i am 23 and 3 years ago had a daughter) that i have had bleeding in between periods, I have never heard of implantation bleeding, is it that? Could I have possibly had a miscarriage and not even known it? I know i should go see a doctor, but until my appt in two days can you guys let me know what you think? By the way i had intercourse two days ago, and I am only one week on my pill (that is 4 weeks, you know??)So I ALWAYS get my period every 5 weeks, and it always comes wednesday and ends sunday, cus that is whe

You are probably experiencing "break-through bleeding". Implantation bleeding is if you get pregnant and you get a little blood when the embryo implants in your uterus--very unlikely if you're on the pill. When I was younger and on the pill, they had to up my hormone level like three times until I stopped bleeding mid-cycle. You may just need to have your prescription adjusted.

Could you have had a miscarriage and not know it? That depends on how you define miscarriage. The pill works in two ways: it acts on your ovaries so that you are unlikely to ovulate. And it also acts on your uterus to make it unfriendly to a fertilized egg that is trying to implant. (I believe it also renders your body fluids more hostile to sperm, though I could be mis-remembering that.) It isn't possible to tell which of these mechanisms is causing you not to have children. You may be conceiving on a monthly basis and simply passing the fertilized egg because it can't implant. But that would happen at the time of your period--and possibly cause heavier bleeding. It would not be happening mid-cycle with light bleeding. Be sure to have your dr clarify how the pill works again when you visit. It's good to understand well the choices we are making.
