Philosophy is an excellent choice, especially if you are a good essay writer. It provides a good background in all types of analysis, which will help your history studies, and you often have the chance to do 'history of ideas' courses, which use your strengths as a student of history. Both involve a lot of reading, as well as an ability to do research.
If you have particular interests in history (history of science, art history, classics) then you can easily match your minor to your major. However, you should be careful of specializing too much - a minor is your chance to explore something beyond your main interest. It would, for example, be a chance to study a language (also useful if you want to read primary sources). Investigate the courses offered at your college or university, and see what interests you.

Social sciences is the way you should be thinking . THink along the lines of Anthropology, PSychology, Sociology, Political science, economics, and or business. If you ever want to teach History those minors will make you eligible to teach at the high school level in California.

It really depends on what occupation you plan on persuing. History majors are basically found in research, teaching and in libraries. Maybe you should seriously consider a double major. A second major in a field such as computer science, library science, political science increases your chance and choice of employment.
