That will work. The octane is raised with additives at the refinery, so half 85 and half 89 will give you the exact same thing as buying 87.

Fuel is fuel these days. Most fuel comes from the same local distirbutor with proprietary additives. Using 85 will not hurt anything unless you have a high compression engine. If you have a newer car then I would recommend the higher octane. If you are taking a long trip use the higher octane. Dont worry about the two points unless you have knocking or pinging.

Try this fill up with 85 and buy you a can of 104 Octane boost
and it should work my old 1985 Horizon use to only run on 89 and i tryed that and it worked but that was a older car
i don't have it any more i sold it in 2001

Not really, because the octane level is an indicator of engine knock, not the power and combustability of the fuel. My car will run on 87 octane, but the manufacturer recommends a minimum of 91 to prevent engine knocking. You won't see a power increase in going to a higher octane, but your engine will make less knocking noises.
