I was an aspiring cartoonist when I was younger. (never made it). Being a successful cartoonist is like being a rock star or movie star. For ever one that makes it, there are hundreds, if not thousands you never hear of.

However, do not let that discourage you. If you love drawing and writing comics you should continue. But, do it because you love it, not to get rich. You can become a cartoonist and make a good living without ever becoming famous or rich. If you are doing it for money, you will most likely fail.

Most successful cartoonists will tell you that their success was an accident and a surprise. Why do you think guys like Charles Schultz and Mort Walker kept working well past retirement age, even though they were both multi-millionaires? They did it because they loved creating comics. That should be what motivates you.

Oh yes they will, but only if they are hits, just like you said. Matt Groening, who created The Simpsons, started small as an editor and contributed comic strips to newspapers. Then his works got on Tracy Ullman and there you go, Simpsons.Pretty much you have to start small humbly and never be discouraged if your works are not funny or interesting. And one last thing, being a millonaire doesn't mean that you don't have work to do.

Absolutely. Todd McFarlaine *creator of Spawn and others* was the guy who bought those Mark McGuire homerun balls a few years ago for quite a few million.
